International Students – Maintain Your Status While Away

If you are an international student in the United States, you may have questions about how to maintain your immigration status in the US while you study away at NYU Abu Dhabi next semester. The Office of Global Services is here to help! Please visit the OGS website (scroll all the way down) for more information about what you need to do before you leave/return to the US.  Please contact ogs@nyu.edu with any questions regarding your status as an international student.

Reminder: Student Information Form & Passport Copies Due to OGS

All students must complete the Student Information Form and upload a copy of their passport to OGS.  These two steps must be completed in order for OGS to produce any immigration documents and communicate other key steps in the visa process.

If you are currently in the process of renewing your passport, please inform us either via the Student Information Form or via email at ogs.outbound@nyu.edu.  You will still receive reminders from our office to complete the upload, and it’s imperative that you upload the copy as soon as you receive your passport.

Introducing: The Office of Global Services (OGS)

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, your OGS advisor. My name is Meredith Hansen and I will be your primary contact person for all visa related questions. Please keep in mind that Patrick Stancil and the rest of the Global Programs team will be your primary contact for everything non-visa related to your semester abroad.

On Tuesday, October 11 you should have received an email directly from our office. This email highlights our comprehensive visa instructions, which will help guide you through the immigration process.

You will work with an advisor at OGS to ensure that you are able to arrive at your study abroad site with the appropriate documentation to study.  You will receive emails from OGS, but know that I am your primary contact for immigration related questions and you can reach out to me at meredith.hansen@nyu.edu or 212-998-4157.

Passport Information, Including NYU Passport Drive

In order to study abroad, all students must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your time abroad (i.e. beyond November 2017). This is mandated by the government of the country where you will be studying!

If you do not have a passport, or your current passport expires before the date above, you should take immediate steps to obtain or renew it. Due to the limited time between now and the start of the program, you are strongly encouraged to apply for a passport with expedited service. Standard service for US passports takes 4-6 weeks, however we need a copy of your passport far sooner than this. Expedited service takes 2-3 weeks which is our recommendation (Please note there is an additional charge for expedited service if needed). Keep in mind that if you require a visa for your study abroad program, your visa process may take a number of weeks as well. US Passport Agencies can also expedite the process further with a letter from our office. If you would like to pursue that option, please send us an email at ogs.outbound@nyu.edu and we will be happy to supply it.

Additionally, NYU OGS is hosting a Passport Drive this Friday, October 14th, from 10am-2pm.  Representatives from the US Department of State will be accepting US passport applications.  If you have not applied for or renewed your passport, we strongly recommend you attend. Additional information can be found here.  Registration is required.

Non-US citizens should contact their local embassy or consulate for information about their passport renewal process. You can find a complete list of embassies and consulates worldwide here.

Save the Date – Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation

Save the date!  All students currently in the New York area are expected and required to attend the NYU Paris Pre-Departure Orientation on Saturday, November 5.  Only students with religious observances will be excused.

If you are unable to attend because of religious observance, you must email me by October 21st. Alternative arrangements will be made for those students.

If you are currently studying outside of New York, don’t worry — we will also make alternative arrangements later in the semester so you receive all the same information.
